Blue-footed booby

The extraordinarily vivid blue feet of this bird are thought to be important in their elaborate mating dance called ‘sky pointing’. Somewhat clumsy walking, the blue-footed boobies are some of the most graceful fliers in the Galapagos Islands. They are also expert divers, with specially adapted air sacs in their skulls that allow them to dive into the water at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. When conditions are right, the blue-footed boobies can be seen feeding in huge groups consisting of thousands of birds.
